Description: Parafilm M is a unique self-sealing, moldable and flexible film for numerous uses in the typical laboratory. It has unique permeability properties, impressive water vapor transport properties, and is resistant to many common reagents. With the use of the special dispenser, which is sized to take either the 50 mm or 100 mm wide rolls, one can conveniently cut off uniform sized strips or squares of 50.8 mm in length. The thickness of all Parafilm products is 127µm.

 

Features: This film is a semi-transparent, flexible, thermoplastic film that provides a waterproof barrier for covering laboratory vessels. It is gas permeable with low water permeability. Ideal for use in Microbiology and Cell Culture applications as it does not affect oxygen or carbon dioxide permeability. Nontoxic material is resistant to acids, alkalis, alcohols and organic solvents.

★Carbon dioxide: (Modulated IR Method) 1200 cc/m² d at 23°C and 0% RH

★ Water Vapor: (ASTM F1249-01)

Flat: 1 g/m² d at 38°C and 90% RH

After stretching: 1 g/m² d at 38°C and 90% RH

2. Compatibility of commonly used reagents

★ Potassium permanganate

5%: permanent dark brown within 18 hours, no other obvious reaction

0.1%: Same as 5%, but slightly lighter in color

★ 0.1N iodine solution

Turn brown within 18 hours with no other noticeable reaction

★ Ethyl Alcohol (95%)

Partial whitening within 24 hours, no other obvious reaction

★No obvious reaction within 24 hours:

Hydrochloric acid concentration (12N)dil. (5n)

Sulfuric acid concentration (36n) dil. (5n)

Nitric acid concentration. (16n) dil. (5n)

Sodium Hydroxide Concentration (22%)

Ammonium Hydroxide Concentration (28% NH3)

★Not recommended for use with chlorinated solvents, non-polar aliphatic and aromatic solvents.
